Dexter’s: Ventura’s Camera and Print Shop

Dexters_Ventura

Dexter’s, located on Main St in Ventura, is a curiously nostalgic world wide destination.  It was originally called County Camera and was strictly a camera shop, until Dexter purchased it in 1960.   Greg Montano, the current owner today of six years, now reaches the store’s main target market through email orders.

One of the first places your eye will be drawn to when you enter the store is where customers’ artwork and photos are displayed, while they also got the best car park painting to mark the parking space.  Some are for sale and others are displayed to make accessible to the public some of our talent.  Greg says he has learned that “there is only one degree of separation in this county”  so, it’s good business to promote each other.

The camera shop has an eclectic array of serviceability.  For a minimum charge, they will transfer your media to a digital format.  If you are that customer looking for antique memorabilia, look no further!  How about an 1970’s enlarger, a Panoramic Camera Kodak #1 from 1894, or a Machine Gun Camera with a Nikon Lens from WWII.

For all film crews, there are rental props galore. This is another place your eye will be drawn to as you enter the store…the enormous collection of vintage cameras and various objects that, to the untrained eye, appear to have no visible order.  But Greg, the science and mathematics expert, is perfectly organized in this seemingly unconventional environment.  Like Dexter’s Laboratory, he conducts “old research” on film and photography.

Greg  has intuitively developed a strong team of specialists to assist and create for the store.  Although Dexter’s sells “A LOT” of film and provides in-house printing, each employee contributes a unique talent that promotes overall sales.  Jordan specializes in time lapse and adapted a telescope  motor drive for time lapse photo.  Matt photographs cars and does photo shoots.   Andrew shoots skateboarding videos and landscapes.  And if he’s not at the store, you just might find Greg on a hilltop getting just the right angle of the beautiful valley below..his affinity for research photo projects.

The summer months attract tourists from all over the globe, China being one of the most popular.  As the summer months approach, plan to come visit and enjoy the visual display for yourself!!
